Most of us are unaware of how the book publishing and distribution network now operates. Traditionally new and innovative authors could find like-minded publishers who might be willing to gamble on their books. Independent booksellers have always provided a market for and sought out books that were not mainstream.

Now, after much consolidation in the publishing industry, most large publishers have strong ties with the large chains. Before considering publishing a book, the publisher may consult with the large chains to determine its potential profitability. This, in turn, may decide whether or not the book will get to market. This limits the choice of what you and I get to read. The bottom line has become profitability instead of literary merit.

Independent bookstores have been undermined by Amazon. Many sophisticated analysts have looked at Amazon’s financial statements. It is unclear at this time whether or not it is a profitable company. Most analysts are comfortable stating that Amazon does not make a profit from selling books. Our feeling is that after the vast majority of independent booksellers have closed down it is likely that Amazon will raise their prices in order to operate with a more realistic profit margin. Independents cannot compete with Amazon prices, but we believe that their value-added services, personal touch, and physical presence in local communities are worth supporting. You decide!!
