OCCULT

Occult means "concealed," or "mysterious," or "demanding more than ordinary perception or knowledge to be understood." I think when most of us see or hear the word "occult," we probably associate it with the word "powers"—as in occult powers. It conjures up an impression of witchcraft, séances, mediums, and lots of "other worldly stuff." I think that many of us think that many "occultists" and books about the occult are of questionable veracity. We have tried to cull the best and most interesting books that people have enjoyed and discussed, based on our 20 years running this bookstore. We hope these books are a cut above some of the less credible stuff that is out there.

Return of the Revolutionaries: The Case for Reincarnation and Soul Groups Reunited

Walter Semkiw

Whether you believe the author’s reasoning or even if you do not, you will have to admit that this book’s basic premise is quite unique.

The author feels we are on the verge of some sort of political golden age, due to the fact that a group soul reincarnation of our founding fathers is happening. He shows photos and similarities between our Revolutionary heroes and our current batch of politicians, linking them together through similar facial and personal traits. You may be shocked by some of the choices and amused by others. For local, or people with a Fairfield connection, the names John Hagelin & Bobby Roth will ring a few bells. I found this book to be a great conversation piece. When it was first published I kept a copy on the checkout counter of our bookstore to share with our customers. Many found it quite fascinating, while others debated the whole concept. It was quite the conversation starter. This book is truly one of a kind, no matter what your political persuasion.

Review by Tony Kainauskas.

Return of the Revolutionaries by Walter Semkiw, M. D. aka John Adams is certainly a unique journey into the subject of reincarnation. He sets out to prove a thesis about group reincarnation. It is his claim that a group of key figures in the American Revolution are back, in new bodies, and for the most part involved in today’s political scene. He claims to have been led to his beliefs, and/or had these beliefs corroborated by a discarnate spirit. He also uses what I would call circumstantial evidence from facial appearances, writing styles, personal interests, etc. to bolster his case. I am not sure I find his conclusions or evidence compelling, but the man is intelligent and thorough in his presentation, and the book is quite interesting. I found the chapter on Uri Geller very informative and most interesting. If you want to see who he claims were previous incarnations for people like Gore, Bush, the Kennedy’s, Clinton, Hagelin, Nader, Oprah, Shirley MacLaine, and many others the book will keep you interested.

The Story of Edgar Cayce: There Is a River

Thomas Sugrue

This is the best book to start learning about Cayce. This book was written in 1942, about 4 years before Cayce died, by Sugrue, who was a college buddy of one of Cayce’s sons, and who lived for a few years with the Cayce family. It is a straightforward biography. Sugrue does a nice job of storytelling along with capturing the esoteric import of the Cayce data and phenomena. I have given away 20 or 30 copies of this book to friends over the years. It seems to me to present compelling and unassailable evidence of the existence of ESP or clairvoyance. I can never understand how people can read this book and still doubt the validity of more subtle planes of existence than most materialists will admit exist. Read it, and let us know what you think.

Return From Tomorrow

George G. Ritchie

I find myself to be skeptical of books that deal with near death experiences. I mean, is it for real or was the author hallucinating or dreaming?

Ritchie’s book struck me as being different… there was a sense that this is it.

Ritchie is currently a Medical Doctor and was chairman of the Dept. of Psychiatry of Towers Hospital. His experience took place during World War II as he lay in an army hospital. The incident took 9 minutes. Whether he was really dead during this period is a judgment call, (he was pronounced as such) but he was as close to death as a human can be.

His experience makes the after life seem like an advanced University course of spiritual learning. And much of our experience there is dependent on how we lived our lives here. Ultimately the main thing that stuck with me about this book was the total unconditional love that the author felt during his time away from his body. It was so powerful and encompassing that it was unlike any experience he felt on Earth. Reading these passages helped to lessen my own fear of death and reading his words helped create a deep peace within myself.

The book itself is short and can be read in one sitting, and due to its riveting subject material many do.

If you have any interest in near death experiences this is the book for you. Dr Ritchie’s experience was the motivating factor behind Raymond Moody’s (recognized authority on the subject of near death) lifelong passionate study of this phenomenon.

The Book of Secrets

Osho

This book by Osho is literally and figuratively "heavy." It is a hardbound volume of over 1000 pages. It is the "soup to nuts" compendium of Osho’s teachings. It is about life, death, and everything in between. It is both philosophical and practical, containing many techniques suggested to practice. If Osho had attained the widespread acceptance as one of the great teachers of the 20th Century, like Nisargadatta, this book would be the equivalent of I Am That. For the serious student of Yoga, Tantra, the metaphysical, and the occult, this is a giant feast that can be read slowly over a long period of time.

A Search in Secret India

Paul Brunton

This book is included in our very select category Books You Can’t Live Without Not only is Brunton given credit for introducing Ramana Maharshi to the West, but this book stands out, at least in my opinion, as a great classic among all the books ever written by Western seekers who have gone to the East, seeking truth and/or a guru. This is a fantastic chronicle of a spiritual journey. It is also a real "period piece" describing both England and India in an earlier age of greater innocence. Brunton does a perfect job of describing his pursuit and his meetings with many miraculous saints and miracle men. I rank this book right up there with Autobiography of a Yogi, books that everyone, not just seekers, must read and will almost certainly enjoy. If you have not yet read this book, you have a real treat in store for yourself.

One Man's Journey to Truth

Denie Hiestand

This is not a book I would recommend to everyone. In fact I am not sure if I should include it in this catalogue. I decided to include it because it was interesting and quite unique. Hiestand is a Kiwi; a native of New Zealand and his life is quite a journey. There is love, despair, and a lot of pathos in his story. It appears to be honestly told and touches upon all of the issues that Seeker's encounter. The author is quite a unique dude, and he had many powerful encounters and experiences that are worth reading about.

BABA: Autobiography of a Blue-Eyed Yogi

Rampuri

I have read almost every book that I can get my hands on which describes the journeys or pilgrimages of seekers looking for Truth, Enlightenment, or "The Holy Grail." Most of them I enjoy. Most of them I recommend. Most of them have a great deal in common. This one is quite unique, and it will definitely keep you interested and give you insights you will not have read elsewhere.

Rampuri (the given name of the American author, born in 1950 in Chicago, and raised in Beverly Hills) is the name given to the author when he took the vows as a Sanyassin and became a true yogi in a little known (by Westerners) ancient tradition of wisdom in India. Some of us, familiar with the Naga Baba's, who get famous every 12 years or so when there is a big Kumbha Mela in Allahabad, may know a tiny bit about this ancient and honorable tradition, but for the first time, the practices, knowledge, and day to day lifestyle of the Babas is presented from an insider's viewpoint.

I can't really begin to describe this book, this incredible journey. It is very authentic and will really blow your mind. This is clearly a unique story and has some very unique knowledge and experiences contained in it. Rampuri was 19 when he arrived in India in 1969. He was 20 years old when he met Hari Puri Baba, who became his guru. Rampuri was the first and perhaps only foreigner initiated in Juna Akhara, the ancient order of the Renunciates of the Ten Names. In 1984 Rampuri established his own ashram in Hardwar.

Rampuri has clearly gone places, done things, and arrived at certain knowledge that few, if any Westerners have ever experienced. I think anyone who reads this book is in for a treat and will certainly experience a few "eye-openers."

There is a big dose of mysticism and quite an interesting angle on the Vedas that flow from Rampuri. The book must be read, as I feel inadequate to do justice in trying to describe the uniqueness and esoteric aspects of the journey.

The Synchronized Universe: New Science of the Paranormal

Claude Swanson, Ph.D.

All my life I have been driven by the desire to know things, to seek answers, and to try to put together the puzzle of what reality is, and how to explain many of the great mysteries of life and human experience.

I think that the author of this book, Swanson, is a soul-mate of mind. He seems driven by the same motives and interests. The difference is that I just read about things and he has actually done the work, done the studies, and compiled them into this most remarkable book.

Swanson is obviously bright (MIT undergraduate degree) and accomplished (Ph.D. and other advanced degrees in physics from Princeton and Cornell.) Furthermore his hero, the Nobel Prize winning physicist Richard Feynman, is also my personal hero. Here in Swanson's own words is his approach to life, which is reflected in this book:

I often wonder how my physics education would have been different if, instead of conducting experiments on radioactivity and superconductivity, for which physics has very good theories, if I had taken the same equipment and gone to a haunted house! Or measured the energy fields around healers as they worked. Then, instead of confirming the science of the textbook, I would have measured things that defy the textbooks. Unfortunately, my curriculum did not include such adventures, and it was ten years later before I got around to those more unconventional pursuits

But it is an important lesson for all scientists. Our educational curriculum is designed to convince that the theories in the book are true. There are no organized curricula in physics departments which encourage the student to seek out the strange places and events that break the rules.

Science has no clue about what consciousness is, for example. There is no adequate physical theory of it, and yet each one of us has one (it?). It is familiar but inexplicable. In this book we have reviewed other subjects which science cannot explain: the out-of-body experience, remote viewing, ESP, prophecy (knowledge of the future), the effects of group consciousness… and psycho kinesis (PK) to name a few. These have been proven repeatedly in laboratory experiments over decades, with the rules of scientific statistics and controls. By any objective measure, they are real phenomena. [Emphasis added]

So, that pretty much tells you where the author is coming from and what this book is about. All that I will add is that it is remarkably readable and the data and experiments chosen are fascinating and often mind-blowing. Swanson is not only an accomplished scientist; but he has obviously done his homework on the spiritual side, citing references from many profound sources. I loved this book!! I hope you will give it a try. Whether you are a believer or a skeptic, a seeker or a finder, a scientist or a layman, I am almost certain you will enjoy the data and the presentation.

The Miracle Man: The Life Story of Joao de Deus

Robert Pellegrino-Estrich

If you are anyone you know is in the unfortunate circumstance of having a debilitating physical disease of worse yet, a terminal illness, you really ought to read, or give your friend a copy of The Miracle Man: The life story of Joao De Deus , by Robert Pellegrino-Estrich.

In July of 2006 a good friend from out of town was visiting Fairfield and he paid Dena and me a visit. He had just returned from Brazil where he and two friends had spent two weeks in the small encampment where John of God has treated over 11 million people in 30 years. The story of John of God has been well-researched and well-documented. A great deal of information is available via the web. There have been TV documentaries and many articles written about him.

This simple book gives excellent insights into what is happening the mechanics of what John of God does when he does operations, removes tumors, cures Aids, etc. It is an astonishing little book. (John of God is a medium, but that is only the beginning of the story and really only scratches the surface of this phenomenon.)

The fact that my friend was there and saw these things and experienced the powerful vibrations in this unique spiritual center of healing gives me a very high level of confidence that this is for real.

Furthermore, the miraculous healings at the Casa de Dom Inacio are now more easily accessed by non-Brazilians. It is only a 2 hour drive from Brasilia. The roads are good, and the accommodations are quite nice.

If someone wants or needs to go there, one can email the author of this book (he provides his email address at the end of the book) who can arrange transportation from Brasilia and quiet and clean accommodations with meals.

Seriously, this book is a Must Read, by everyone!

A gripping book on a very fascinating subject. Remote viewing is the ability to correctly perceive and describe previously unknown people, places, objects or events. The author had a near death experience and upon awakening perceived psychic flashes … later he was confirmed as a world-class remote viewer. McMoneagle was recruited for a top military program code name Stargate, to develop remote viewing skills for national security purposes. The author has been featured on ABC’s Nightline and in articles in Newsweek and Time. In this book he demonstrates how the proper use of Remote Viewing can unleash great intuitive resources within all of us
