TM

TM is our single most important category. This is "our home court" advantage. Fairfield is the de facto U.S. capital of the TM movement. In the 20 plus years we have been in business we have seen every book ever written about or relating to TM. We have sold more books about TM than any other bookstore in the world. Listed below are the best books currently published about or relating to TM. If you have visited our store you may be familiar with the imported books and pamphlets that have been perennial best sellers. If you have never shopped in our store, you now have the opportunity to discover, read, and enjoy many of these selections. By and large these books are transcriptions of speeches or lectures from the early days of the TM movement. Some of them are compilations of the wisdom Maharishi gave as he answered the questions of sincere seekers on teacher training courses. My personal favorite is Power of Silence, which includes some of Maharishi's earliest messages when he first came out of the Himalayas. It also contains his wisdom on many important subjects such as Love, Friendship, Evolution, Soul, Veda, and even Woman. This makes a spectacular gift from the thoughtful person. If, as, and when new books are released, or old favorites are newly published, we will add them to this list. Please feel free to call or email us if you have any questions or seek any guidance in selecting among these treasures.

The Science of Being and Art of Living

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Maharishi’s book is as is stated in the Introduction, "the summation of the practical wisdom of integrated life advanced by the Vedic Rishis of ancient India, understood in the light of scientific thinking in the present-day western world." There are certain books that everyone must read! Without a doubt this falls into that category, and that is why it is included in our very select list we call "Books You Can’t Live Without". Not only should everyone read this book, it should be read every few years. One of the basic teachings of Maharishi is that "Knowledge is structured in consciousness". This was the motto chosen by Maharishi International University when it was founded. A corollary of this, is that "The world is as you are." I would say that these two interrelated statements form the cornerstone of Maharishi’s teachings. When I first encountered these teachings from Maharishi I grasped their profundity. As I have lived and matured and been exposed to more and more teachers and more and more wisdom, I have come full circle to the realization that there are no more profound teachings than these. This book covers all subjects from all angles of approach. Whatever your state of consciousness and whoever you are, you will gain a tremendous amount of insight into yourself and the nature of reality as you read this book. Because our consciousness is always evolving we should read this book over and over again to maximize our own understanding and evolution.

Bhagavad Gita, A New Translation and Commentary, Chapters 1 - 6

Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

This was first published in 1967. As Maharishi points out in the preface, truth and eternal wisdom are available in the Veda. The absolute, unchanging nature of truth underlies the relative, always changing nature of the manifest universe. Although the underlying truth is independent of time, man’s perception of truth changes with time. There are times when mankind and societies are closer to the truth, and other times when the truth is obfuscated by the blinding influence of the phenomenal world. Mankind has been fortunate to enjoy the revival of truth from time to time as the great teachers and masters of different epochs have expounded it. However, because ultimate Truth is subtle and non-linear in nature, language is an inadequate medium to convey Truth. For example, that which the Buddha knew, he may have been able to communicate to his closest disciples, but as the message gets passed on from one generation to the next inevitably it is subject to change and a diminution of its accuracy and efficacy. The analogy most commonly used is of the party game, called the "telephone game", when one person tells a story which is passed on to each person, one at a time, until it arrives back to the originator in a very distorted manner. It is Maharishi’s purpose in writing this commentary "to restore the fundamental truths of the Bhagavad Gita, and thus restore the significance of its teaching." In my opinion, one of Maharishi’s greatest contributions to the intellectual grasp of enlightenment or higher states of consciousness, is his explanation of how for many generations seekers have been confusing the path with the goal. Maharishi does an incredible job of explaining how the concept or doctrine of non-attachment has been misunderstood by most seekers as referring to "an attitude" when in fact it refers to a state of consciousness. Rather than my trying, in my inept way, to explain this in greater detail, I say go right to the Master, and read this wonderful book. If you have read other translation or commentaries on The Gita, but you have not read this one, you have a real treat in store. This was another "no-brainer" to include in our selections of "Books You Can’t Live Without".

Sage of a New Generation

Alan Waite

Many of our customers and friends have their spiritual roots in TM and the message delivered by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. This DVD format film that goes back to the good old days. This is a high quality documentary (not a propaganda production) that presents precious footage going back to some very early days. There are scenes from Lake Tahoe, and Estes Park, among other venues. There are interviews with meditators and non-meditators who discuss powerful issues like race, drugs, and politics. Whether or not you have ever practiced TM you will find this a remarkable period piece and it will probably find you thinking about where you were and who you were back in the 60's and 70's. There are incredible interviews with Mother Olsen, Jerry Jarvis, Charlie Lutes, and many others, not to mention footage of early talks given by Maharishi. There are also question and answers with Maharishi in some very intimate settings. This is a must own. The DVD also has bonus still photographs of Maharishi.. as well as a history of the TM Movement told by Maharishi

All You Need Is Love: An Eyewitness Account of When Spirituality Spread from the East to the West

Nancy Cooke de Herrera

Nancy has packed three or four lifetimes of living into one. From riding the desert with Sir Edmund Hillary, meeting the Dali Lama, to friendships with many prominent people in politics and Hollywood… Nancy’s is an amazing life story.

About 85 percent of this fascinating autobiography deals with the early beginnings of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) movement in the US. There are many personal stories of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (the founder of the TM Movement) and as I am a long time practitioner of TM myself, I was totally enchanted by this intimate history of my spiritual movement.

Nancy spent many precious moments with Maharishi and was able to ask many fascinating questions… this alone I feel is worth the price of the book. Nancy was also in Rishikesh, India at the time the Beatles, Donovan, and Mike Love were there. This section is like opening a time capsule for readers of my generation.

This is a wonderful book filled with many priceless photos. Even if you do not practice Transcendental Meditation I would still highly recommend Nancy’s book as a first hand account of the advent of Eastern Spirituality to the Western world and, if you are a practitioner of TM and have yet to read this… well what are you waiting for?

Reviewed by Tony Kainauskas.

This is one of my all-time favorite books. The author led an incredible life, both hobnobbing with "the rich and famous", and partaking in a unique spiritual quest. This is one of those books that has something for everyone. On the seeking side, she was very early on with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and, at times, very close to him. Her stories are a must for those who have never been up close and personal with this great master. She reveals the authentic "lowdown" and really is a spellbinding storyteller. She spent part of 1968 on a teacher-training course with Maharishi in Rishikesh. It so happens that this was the course attended by such luminaries as Mia and Prudence Farrow, Donavan, and of course, the Beatles. The chapters on this adventure are rated "can’t miss." The book has great recollections and priceless pictures. If you have not read this book you are in for a real treat.

Dance of a Rich Yogi: Liberation Through Loss

Ed Beckley

One day Ed had it all… millions of dollars, beautiful homes, a loving family, direct attention from his Spiritual Guru, and the respect and admiration of his hometown of Fairfield Iowa. The next day he was in a cab being driven to Federal Prison to serve time for fraud.

Ed’s journey from material wealth to loss to spiritual fullness intersects various masters from Maharishi Mahesh Yogi to Mata Amritanandamayi (Amma)… and various spiritual disciplines. I most enjoyed the sections on Ed’s stay at Amma’s ashram in India… the pleasures and the hardships of being with Amma at her Indian home makes for enjoyable reading and is a peek at the reality of Ashram life. Also, the prison section was riveting. Ed’s stories of his relationships with the guards and fellow prisoners created an interesting juxtaposition between Ashram and prison life. Ed was a long time resident of Fairfield, Iowa (the US capital of the TM Movement) and during the 1980’s he founded and was head of The Beckley Group, at that time Fairfield, Iowa’s largest employer.

Review by Tony Kainauskas.

Strictly truthful or somewhat fictional doesn’t really matter when it comes to a good read. This book definitely qualifies as a good read. The author’s life as told here is fascinating. Mr. Beckley pulls you in with a lively, detailed account of dramatic life experiences and frames the whole thing as a cosmic unfolding preceding liberation and enlightenment. He doesn’t try to prove that the events of his life actually caused the enlightenment, just that they preceded it—smart move. The account of his approximately thirteen months in prison is particularly good reading partly because most of us have never had an experience remotely akin to it. He earns an A+ from the reader and the cosmic grader for doing his best to turn lemons into lemonade, or as his friend Satyam Nadeem said, "… onions to pearls."

Human Physiology: Expression of Veda and the Vedic Literature

Tony Nader, M.D., Ph.D.
Guided by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

A Textbook of Life for Everyone: Modern Science and Ancient Vedic

Science Discovers the Fabrics of Immortality in the Human Physiology

"Here is the first and final disclosure of knowledge that presents every human being as the embodiment of the total creative process in Nature and renders human life as a field of all possibilities. This offers mastery over Natural Law to everyone, and perfection to every nation—Heaven on Earth." —Maharishi Mahesh Yogi

Magnificent in scope, this groundbreaking work details the relationship between the 40 branches of the Vedic Literature and their corresponding parts in the human physiology. Our physiology is continuously performing millions of tasks to maintain order and balance in its functioning, to allow growth and evolution to occur, and to bring about increasing achievement and fulfillment. The perfect order displayed in the human physiology and throughout the universe is based on Laws of Nature that have been studied by modern science for more than 150 years.

The profound insights into the ancient Vedic Literature brought to light by His Holiness Maharishi MaheshYogi over the past forty years have guided the discovery that the laws that construct the human mind and body are the same as those that give structure to the syllables, verses, chapters, and books of the Vedic Literature.

This discovery has rendered the study of physiology to be the actualization of the supreme philosophy of life, which establishes individual consciousness and national consciousness on the level of Cosmic Life. Dr. Nader's discovery is the revelation of our scientific age which raises the individual dignity of human beings to the cosmic dignity of the universe.

In light of this discovery, Dr. Nader has been honored by Maharishi as Raja Nader Raam, First Sovereign Ruler of the Global Country of World Peace.

The proceeds from the sale of this beautiful publication go toward Maharishi's global peace initiative to establish a permanent group of 40,000 Yogic Flying Vedic Pandits in India. Full color. 610 pages. Please note we have several used copies of most recent editon.. price is $175.00.

The Physiology of Consciousness

Robert Keith Wallace

Dr. Wallace assesses the current health care crisis in the United States, including the rise of stress-related disease, and the side-effects and spiraling costs of modern medicine. These problems will only worsen, Dr. Wallace points out, if addressed merely by making administrative changes in the health care system.

Dr. Wallace presents a new paradigm based on the Maharishi Vedic Science program: the basis and source of the manifest "physiology of matter" is an unmanifest "physiology of consciousness." Only by understanding and directly experiencing this all-pervading level of abstract intelligence can we create true health.

Dr. Wallace conducted the original research on the Transcendental Meditation program and is the founding president of Maharishi University of Management (formerly Maharishi International University), where he currently is Executive Vice President, and Chairman of the Department of Physiological and Biological Sciences.

The Lazy Way to Success: How to Do Nothing and Accomplish Everything

Fred Gratzon

Local Entrepreneur and self-confessed "laziest man in North America" debunks the commonly accepted notion that hard works brings success and argues that doing less is what actually accomplishes more.

The Lazy Way to Success: How to Do Nothing and Accomplish Everything, is a uniquely insightful self-help book, illustrated with humorous caricatures, and which presents a very strong message—frantically working yourself to fragments is not the way to success and happiness. Instead, self-improvement and self-enhancement arises from using our mind, from choosing carefully the work that needs to be done, from seeking solutions at a subtler level than the problem, and from avoiding the insanity of unnecessary work at all costs. Featuring a wisdom that is reminiscent of (and in some ways similar to) Taoism, The Lazy Way to Success is a very highly recommended self-help guide. —Midwest Book Review

You have to read Fred Gratzon's hilarious look at the work ethic. I recommend this entertaining, insightful book on how, indeed, to be successful while still holding onto your inner child, discovering your true calling, and thoroughly enjoying your life. —Alan Caruba, Editor, Bookviews.com

The Lazy Way to Success is a book filled with golden nuggets of opportunity for success of any kind. And it's a fun read. In fact, it is really a funny book though the message is serious.

The cartoon-like illustrations, done by Lawrence Sheaff, are alone worth the price of the book. They're a big part of what makes the book so entertaining. Their depiction throughout the book of Fred Gratzon in his hammock is as realistic as one can imagine, I'm sure. The comic commentaries that accompany the drawings are fabulously fun. You'll want to read every one, and you'll refer back to many as you share parts of this book with friends.

I'll refer back to this book over and over again, and plan on giving it to a few college graduates this spring so they can learn early what many of us have spent years trying to figure out. I think Gratzon does have it pretty much figured out. And I feel good about my own future as I try to follow The Lazy Way to Success for myself. —Carla Offenburger

Extraordinary humor, charm, artistry, and wisdom. I couldn't put this book down! It's brilliant! —Gayatri Lee, Editor, Spirit of the Smokies

Unbelievable! I got hooked on it. I couldn't stop until I was finished. Outstanding book! The one problem I had with it was when I was finished I wanted more. I'm excited. I want to give this book to anybody who walks. It is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful. Congratulations. I am in love with your book. Absolutely. It is wonderful. —Dr. Ichak Adizes, Management Consultant and Best-selling Business Book Author

I read it and I loved it. The Lazy Way to Success is everything you don't think it will be—and more. And even so, it is everything. —David Lynch, Hollywood Director

The Lazy Way to Success is a highly-acclaimed, hilarious, and insightful book about how to become a high achiever—even a rich one—while having a ton of fun and treating those around you right. —Chuck Offenburger

The most important book on success to come down the road in a long time! Funny, with a philosophical depth. This book is a soothing balm. —Die Welt, Germany

Wisdom, wisdom, and more wisdom. Gratzon cleverly takes you through his rationale with some pretty impressive arguments. If nothing more, the logic makes you turn the pages. Lots of common sense that will make you stop and think about where you are in life and where you want to go. Bosses and leaders of the world, listen up. —New Orleans Times-Picayune

These divine songs have a remarkable power and ability to nourish and uplift the heart and consciousness toward a state of complete unity. They are always nourishing, but especially fulfilling when sung during the Nine Days of Mother Divine, which occur in the spring and fall of every year according to the Vedic calendar.

Instrumentation has been limited to the customary use of drone and minimal percussion; using traditional acoustic instruments to encourage maximum purity of intonation along with perfection in pronunciation.

About the Vedic Devata

In the tradition of ancient Vedic Science, there are five main Devata or cosmic administrators, five fundamental structures of the administration of Natural Law. They are known as the pancha Devata. The Sanskrit term Daivi Shakti represents one of these. She is the organizing power of that cosmic intelligence or administrator of Natural Law known as Mother Divine. She is said to nourish all aspects of creation. The three traditional aspects of Mother Divine—Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati—are always said to be together. Durga is the energy and power value, Lakshmi is the nourishing and wealth-giving value, while Saraswati is the knowledge and wisdom value.

The Vedic Literature states: “For eternity, there is nothing other than that one exalted, supreme sovereign Mother Divine, the source of creation—supreme creative intelligence in her magnanimity, supreme invincibility, totality, pure potentiality—the source of everything—the end result of the analysis of the Veda." Signs of the Times: The End of the World and the Coming Golden Age

The author presents a fascinating account of how time and history follow an astrological structure. This structure consists of astrological ages that are chronicled from before the Age of Cancer, and the invention of agriculture around the world, to the present end of the Age of Pisces, and the much-prophesied apocalyptic end of the world.

Within this pattern an end-time cycle emerges that explains the Apocalyptic energies we see around us today. Astrology also promises, in the coming Age of Aquarius, a new golden age and gives us indications of what needs to be done to survive the end-time.

Catching the Big Fish: Meditation, Consciousness and Creativity

David Lynch

“In this rare work of public disclosure, filmmaker David Lynch describes his personal methods of capturing and working with ideas, and the immense creative benefits he has experienced from the practice of meditation.

Over the last four decades, David Lynch has created some of the best-known and widely discussed screen works of our time. This distinctive writer-director's art bears not only the mark of box-office success but also critical acclaim and cultural posterity.

Yet Lynch generally reveals little of himself, or the ideas behind his work. Now he provides a rare window into his methods as an artist and his personal working style. In Catching the Big Fish , Lynch writes candidly about the tremendous creative benefits he has gained from his thirty-two-year commitment to practicing Transcendental Meditation .

In brief chapters, Lynch describes the experience of "diving within" and "catching" ideas like fish-and then preparing them for television or movie screens, and other mediums in which Lynch works, such as photography and painting.

In the book's first section, Lynch discusses the development of his ideas-where they come from, how he grasps them, and which ones appeal to him the most. He then shares his passion for "the doing"-whether moviemaking, painting, or other creative expressions. Lynch talks specifically about how he puts his thoughts into action and how he engages with others around him. Finally, he discusses the self and the surrounding world -and how the process of "diving within" that has so deeply affected his own work can directly benefit others.

Catching the Big Fish provides unprecedented insight into Lynch's methods, as it also offers a set of practical ideas that speak to matters of personal fulfillment, increased creativity, and greater harmony with one's surroundings.

The book comes as a revelation to the legion of fans who have longed to better understand Lynch's deeply personal vision. And it is equally intriguing to anyone who grapples with questions such as: "Where do ideas come from?" and "How can I nurture creativity?”

About the Author

Three-time Oscar-nominated director David Lynch is among the leading filmmakers of our era. From the early seventies to the present day, Lynch's popular and critically acclaimed film projects, which include Blue Velvet , Eraserhead , The Elephant Man , Wild at Heart , Twin Peaks , , , , and Mulholland Drive ,are internationally considered to have broken down the wall between art-house cinema and Hollywood moviemaking.
