Hot Commodities: How Anyone Can Invest Profitably in the World's Best Market
Jim Rogers
Although I am a principal owner of 21st Century Books, most of my productive working years were spent working for an investment bank specializing in growth stocks. Since I left the brokerage industry in 1999, I have focused on trading and investing my own portfolio in stocks, bonds, and commodities. The best advice I have ever received, and that to which I consistently return, is that for most individual, non-professional investors, the best and perhaps only way to make money is to get on board the major trend and ride it out. You must find and profit from secular bull markets.
According to Jim Rogers, (and this is a view with which I am in entire agreement) the secular bull market in stocks is over. Most importantly, according to Rogers, a new secular bull market in commodities began in 1998–1999. Rogers points out that given historical norms, this bull market should last into at least 2015, giving investors plenty of time and opportunities to get aboard and prosper.
Rogers is an investment pro with a proven track record as a winner. He is also an accomplished writer. (If you have not read it, I think you would enjoy and profit from Investment Biker.) Rogers is easy and fun to read.
Hot Commodities really is a "how to" manual, as its subtitle—How Anyone Can Invest Profitably in the World's Best Market—suggests. Rogers makes a very compelling case as to why anyone who has money to invest should learn about, study, and then invest in commodities. On the other hand it is not, nor does it claim to be, a "hot tip" sheet that will guarantee you success and wealth. It does make some very wise and important points, such as: "As I have said many times (but it bears repeating), the history of bull markets tells us that when a long-term secular bull is under way, nearly everything reaches its all-time high."
The essence of the teaching and what this book is about is: "… this book isn't about hot tips on what to buy. It's about how to think about the commodities markets—by looking at the big picture over decades, keeping history in mind, especially the history of the markets (bulls and bears), and paying attention to the news. That's the way I have invested in commodities, and everything else."
I rate this book an absolute must read for anyone who does any investing at all. You cannot afford to not read this book. Whether you are a beginner, novice, or pro you will almost certainly learn much from Hot Commodities and are likely to profit financially from the advice if you are willing to absorb the teachings and put in the effort necessary to discern what to buy and when to buy it.
