First published in 1969, over twelve million copies of this beloved book have been sold since then, and it has been translated into over twenty languages. As a tiny green caterpillar eats his way through the book, he is transformed into a beautiful butterfly. The story ollows the progress of this hungry little caterpillar as he eats his way through a varied and very large quantity of food until, full at last, he forms a cocoon around himself and goes to sleep. Die–cut pages illustrate what the caterpillar eats on successive days.

About the Author/Illustrator
Eric Carle is known all around the world as an outstanding original artist and designer. Born in the United States, he spent some years in Germany, where he studied at the Akademie der bildenen Künste. Returning to the United States, he first worked for the New York Times as a designer, then becaes the art director for a large advertising agenc. His first children's books were immediately successful, and he now devotes his full time to their writing and illustrating.
