Ben Hogan: An American Life
James Dodson
This is the first and only "authorized biography" of one the greatest golfers in history. Ben Hogan was neither a perfect human being nor a perfect golfer. However, his story is an incredible saga of how a man seeks salvation through hard work and how he strives for perfection not only as a golfer, but also as a member of the human race.
Before I had read this book I had heard of Ben Hogan and knew that he was a great golfer. I had no idea of the struggles, triumphs, and even failures that this very unique individual experienced.
If you like well–written biographies that not only explore the outer accomplishments, but the inner struggles, of successful people this is a book you must read. The story of Hogan encompasses the story of his times, from the depression to the booming 90's. I found this book to be a real page–turner. There was lots of drama in the telling of this life.
For anyone interested in golf, and perhaps the greatest golfer (at least from tee to green) of the 20th Century, this is a must read. For those who have no interest in golf there may be other great biographies that are better read. I think this book would make a great gift for a young man or young lady who has an interest in golf and might really benefit from seeing what life was like in the middle decades of the 20th Century.
